BOP Executive Director Position Description

Job Announcement:  Executive Director of Brewers of Pennsylvania

The Brewers of Pennsylvania is seeking a passionate Executive Director with leadership experience to manage and guide the association’s operational, administrative, and advocacy activities.

Organization Overview:

The Brewers of Pennsylvania (BOP) is an advocacy driven organization that aims to play an instrumental part in promoting and protecting the interests of its members and in unifying the larger community of brewers around similar legislative and regulatory issues.  Our Mission Statement is:

The Executive Director of the BOP is the face of the brewing industry in the Commonwealth and is expected to serve as the liaison between BOP members, legislators, regulators, media and the general public.

The Position:

To best serve the BOP and its mission, the Executive Director will:

  • Organize and lead BOP Symposium, Annual Meeting and any other member events determined by the Board to be necessary;
  • Capably receive and act upon directions from the Board of Directors and be highly self-motivated;
  • Establish working relationship with General Counsel and obtain a working grasp of the rules and regulations governing all types of alcohol permits in the state in order to provide guidance on the alcohol rules and regulations;
  • Have experience partnering with legal counsel on agreed upon outcomes benefitting the association;
  • Consult counsel and manage outside contracts that may be used for media, event planning, advocacy or other needs that may arise;
  • Ensure necessary tax filings with BOP accountant
  • Working with the BOP lobbyist, establish working relationships with elected officials and state regulators;
  • Establish relationships as needed with local guild leaders, local brewers, BOP members and associate members, and craft beer fans in general;
  • Be creative, enterprising and successful with fundraising efforts;
  • Be experienced in applying for state funding where applicable;
  • Be persistent, compelling, and successful at convincing individuals or organizations to support the BOP at reduced or no cost.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the BOP, including but not limited to:
    • member outreach and communication,
    • dues collection,
    • ensure account payables are current,
    • membership building,
    • maintenance of membership rosters and data,
    • continually review all BOP protocols to ensure efficiency;
    • coordinate with social media contractor to ensure active, timely and relevant social media presence,
    • responding to press inquiries,
    • overseeing and managing all contractors,
    • and developing strategies to advance the mission of the Association.

Key Qualifications:

When reviewing an applicant for the position of the Executive Director, the Board will consider the candidate’s:

  • Passion for and depth of knowledge of the craft beer industry;
  • Experience in legislative advocacy;
  • Experience in hiring, managing and successfully terminating contractors;
  • Willingness to engage the media as needed and travel throughout the Commonwealth when necessary;
  • Ability to effectively write and disseminate BOP information through social media, the website and other mediums used by the BOP to relay information to its members and the public;
  • Understanding of association finances and the need to ensure compliance with all governing laws surrounding the BOP’s tax-exempt status;
  • Ability to ensure timely dissemination of information to the BOP Board, whether it be financial, disciplinary, media opportunities, event sponsorships or anything deemed material to the efficient working of the Association;
  • Ability to build coalitions of support for legislative actions and to advise the Board of best practices for working with industry allies;
  • Willingness to delegate to contractors, Board members, BOP members, associate members, and volunteers where appropriate, though full understanding that accountability resides with the Executive Director.

Compensation:

The Executive Director position is an independent contractor with monthly compensation of $5,000.  As a independent contractor, this position does not receive benefits.

Timeframe for Hiring

Applications for this position are due no later than 4pm EST on March 21, 2025.  Those candidates asked to interview will do so the week of March 17, 2025 and a final decision will be made no later than April 7, 2025.  Candidates should be advised that while travel outside of the Commonwealth is rare in this role, the new Executive Director will be expected to attend the Craft Brewers Conference in Indianapolis April 28, 2025 through May 1, 2025.
